The John Otto Award

We have found great beauty in the world around us and we want to share that with you, the reader. We value truth and insight. We are not afraid to recognize that life is difficult and people make mistakes.  But, what we celebrate are the triumphs and victories we have experienced.  Whether it was on a mountain top or out on a desert trek, we have found something and we want to share that experience with you, the reader. We follow our path, 'our Tao' and we are not ashamed of the scars that are upon us, they are our badges of experience that give us tenure in this life.

ABOUT US

Today Rocky Ireland writes and publishes in many forms: poetry seen on this website; technical reports for engineers and architects; website text and development; as well as governmental recording of data.

Company history -

Rocky Ireland was born in the desert of the Western United States. Ironic that it would be born here in such a dry climate, since it has such irish roots. But, this is the irish irony. For years the seed lay dormant within us. Then certain events caused that seed to germinate and Rocky Ireland was born.

The Irish Republic has been through invaders and wars, with its people being bought, sold, and ran off their land. They have had their native Gaelic language taken from them and through all of this they 'Saved Civilization' (Cahill). The irish are a hardy people.

The irish tradition to write was started soon after St. Patricks arrival in the early 5th century. Products of their work is evident today through the Landisfarne Gospels and the Book of Kells. The Book of Kells dates back to the 8th century. It exists (the same as it has for 1300 years) at Trinity College in Dublin. From these roots Rocky Ireland has grown.

Influences

We recognize we could not be who we are today without the work of great writers of the past lighting the way.  Some of the writers that have influenced us are: John Donne, John Dryden, Andrew Marvell, John Steinbeck, Ernest Hemingway, Ezra Pound, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Louis Decimus Rubin Jr., & St. Patrick the Patron Saint of Ireland

 The Writer -

Writing takes it's toll on the writer. - Writers such as J.D. Salinger,T.S. Eliot, James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway, Oscar Wilde, Ezra Pound, C.S. Lewis, Flannery O'Conner, and others, had very serious struggles with living (yes, most of these were irish).

Writing is about the toll that life takes. - Life can be difficult. Sickness, war, and life struggles present challenges to mankind. Many writers have known these challenges first hand.  But their struggles were recorded, and from their works we can see how courageous they were. Through their faith and their character they lived. From this, we gain courage to face this life.
